THE OUTER KITCHEN GARDEN
This used the valuable space or slips
around the south and west walls. The
area was enclosed by a further wall on
the east extended out from the east
wall of the flower garden. The Sales
Particulars of 1902 mention ‘Alder and
Sycamore screening hedges’ which
enclosed the south and west sides.
The terrain is uneven and slopes down

from the east to the west in a valley
like formation. A path defines the wall
borders around the south and west
wall. These walls had wall fruit.
Grassed over old cultivation ridges are
visible. Two doorways, now blocked, on
the south wall provided access from
the kitchen and flower garden
respectively. Some cultivation was
practised here up until the 1960s. The
outer Kitchen was overlooked by a
both attached to the east wall.
