TREE NURSERY
In the 1860s and 1870s Mitchel Henry
planted hundreds of thousands of
trees on the demesne and estate.
Many of these would have been
started in this nursery ground. It is
enclosed on the east, north and west
by a brisk wall while the remaining
P1100644.JPG P1100645.JPG portions were hedged with Alder and
Sycamore. From the evidence of an
early Laurence photograph the north
and west walls would appear to have
been built slightly later that the
garden wall. It is unclear how much of
the enclosed space was used as a
nursery. Only the space to the north of
the drive is shown as planted on 1898
and some of the remaining area may
have been used for kitchen produce.
The former area has been planted with
young oak a few years ago.

The Walls
The walls shave been comprehensively photographed as far as they were reasonably
accessible. Generally all of the walls are in need of some maintenance and there are
sections which require more serious work.
Areas around gates and openings are generally in need of most work due to the
junctions and previous “repairs” often involving cement based renders.
Refer to the Appendix “Garden Walls Photographic Record” This can become a template
onto which a schedule of repairs may be made, once the priorities are established.
