Furthermore, we work closely with Facilities to ensure the maintenance of our campus pools and the Salt Water Intake System located at Campus Point. Our partnership is evident in the collaboration between the Dive and Boat Safety Program and the Marine Science Institute to launch the DIVErsity in Diving Program. This innovative initiative is designed to eliminate obstacles for students passionate about marine fieldwork by providing financial assistance, mentorship, and guidance to aspiring scientific divers. Collectively, these partnerships significantly enhance the effectiveness of our program for the campus community.Over the past year, our program has expanded significantly with the responsibilities of the newly established UC Enterprise Dive and Boat Safety Program. Under the UC Office of the President initiative, we now provide oversight and support for all scientific diving and boating operations at UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, and the UC Gump Field Station on Moorea, French Polynesia. While our success hinges on effective standards, policies, training, and support programs, we equally emphasize the cultivation of an effective safety culture. Wherever our faculty, researchers, students, and staff work globally, they are part of the Dive and Boat Safety Program%u2019s community, ensuring a commitment to safety in all endeavors.UC Santa Barbara%u2019s Dive and Boat Safety Program supports and oversees one of the oldest, largest, and most active scientific diving and boating programs of its kind. From Antarctica to our Channel Islands, Mono Lake to the islands of French Polynesia, and from Carlsbad to Curacao, our program%u2019s support and oversight extend globally, addressing unique safety and logistical challenges at each location.Last year, 135 divers accomplished 6697 scientific dives. Our fleet of 26 research vessels completed 1,047 trips%u2014all without any reportable incidents, a testament to our program%u2019s effectiveness. To prepare and train our faculty, researchers, students, and staff to become safe and proficient scientific divers, each diver must complete our 12-day, 100-hour scientific diving course. This comprehensive training regimen includes 4 pool sessions, 12 ocean dives, Diver Emergency Management Training, and specialized dive techniques. Our Boat Safety Program now offers training sessions that provide hands-on experience in boat trailering and operating tiller and center console vessels. This training is conducted at multiple locations, including our campus boatyard, Santa Barbara Harbor, Cachuma Lake, and the UC Gump Field Station on Moorea, French Polynesia. In addition to training, forging strong partnerships across campus departments is essential for the success of our program.
