QUESTIONS:
1.1. Compare and contrast the register of paragraph 1 and paragraph 3 of the text.
Your answer should make close reference to each paragraph. (3)
Paragraph 1:
● Informal
● Makes use of contractions “you’ll”/ conversational language “ before i get into that”
Paragraph 3:
● Formal
● No contractions /reference to academic terminology “based on many psychological texts”/
correct grammar.
1.2. Refer to paragraph 4.
1.2.1. Identify and discuss two beliefs you have about yourself that could be classified as
“self-limiting”. (3)
Students are awarded half a mark for each ‘limit’ identified and a full mark is awarded for each
explanation of the identified limit (explanation must refer to how this belief has restricted them in
some way).
1.3. Refer to paragraph 7.
1.3.1. Discuss the extent to which you agree with the author’s statement that “happiness is a
decision”. Substantiate your answer. (2)
Students are awarded marks for having a valid and convincing reasoning for their opinion.
1.3.2. What suggestion is made about our judgement of others and their actions? (2)
We can assume that the author is saying that our default reaction is to assume the worst of
others and their intentions when, in fact, most people have good intentions.
1.4 Refer to paragraph 8.
1.4.1 Explain how you think encountering “unexpected setbacks and difficulties” can reflect your
Attitude. Use your own words. (2)
When we encounter difficult or unexpected situations, we automatically revert to the unfiltered
version of ourselves because we are experiencing stress or pressure and this is when our true
attitude is reflected.
1.5. Refer to paragraph 9.
1.5.1. Suppose you had already learnt how to think positively and as a result you have
experienced a “boost in confidence” allowing you to take on new tasks that you were once not
confident enough to face.
Write down one task that you would take on now that you have increased confidence
and explain what thoughts had prevented you from doing it before. (2)
Students are awarded a mark for identifying a task that they would not have done before having
this “boost in confidence”
