EIJ: I have to say that you have an impressive career, please tell us about how you began your career as a
Forensic Toxicologist at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto, Canada.

Jim Wigmore: When I joined the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto in 1976 the training was conducted
mainly at the individual forensic laboratories themselves. Fortunately, I joined one of the largest forensic lab
in North America with superb and experienced staff of over 130 individuals at that time, and so I received
excellent, practical training. This was many years before the popularity of forensic TV shows such as CSI.
Now many Universities have undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the various forensic disciplines,

I was initially hired as a forensic technician and was responsible for the repairs and maintenance of all the
Breathalyzers used by the various police forces throughout Ontario. I eventually “caught ire” and went back
to the University of Toronto part time to inish my degree. I started lecturing on the 2 week Breathalyzer
Technician Training Course and took on increasing responsibilities and promotions and start conducting
research and published numerous scientiic papers. Eventually I became a court-going forensic scientist or
toxicologist specializing in alcohol. The rest is history as they say.
