In 2020 when the world
has limited options for
entertainment and things to
keep our minds occupied, a
book is a good way to fill the
time and give us something to
think about, to take ourselves
away from the world for even
a minute can do wonderous
things for our mental health and
wellbeing and this book will do
just that.
Divergent is the first book in
a series by Veronica Roth and
is based around a futuristic,
fictional earth in which all has
been destroyed, by a tragedy
unbeknownst to the reader.
The story is based, a futuristic
dystopian Chicago. The book
has incredible writing features
and follows a first-person
narrative following the main
character Beatrice Prior, and
her experiences, emotions and
inner-turmoil as she faces the
challenges this world presents
to her. The city is composed
of 5 factions- each built upon
specific virtues and values,
but I will leave these for you to
discover for yourself. As in any
good futuristic dystopian novel
there is a protagonist, 16-year-
old Beatrice Prior who has to
face the biggest decision of her
life, whether she should remain
in her ‘birth faction’ or move
to the faction she feels she
belongs. The book is fuelled by
drama, friendship, romance and
war; a good read that I would
recommend for people who
