Diesel fuel in general is any liquid fuel used in diesel engines. The most common is a specific fractional
distillate of petroleum fuel oil, but alternatives that are not derived from petroleum, such as biodiesel,
biomass to liquid (BTL) or gas to liquid (GTL) diesel, are increasingly being developed and adopted. To
distinguish these types, petroleum-derived diesel is increasingly called petro diesel. Ultra-low-sulfur
diesel (ULSD) is a standard for defining diesel fuel with substantially lowered sulfur contents.
As of 2007, almost all diesel fuel available in the United States of America, Canada and Europe is the
ULSD type. In the UK, diesel fuel for on-road use is commonly abbreviated DERV, standing for Diesel
Engine Road Vehicle. In Australia Diesel fuel is often known as 'distillate’ Diesel fuel is produced from
petroleum and from various other sources. The resulting products are interchangeable in most
applications an energy density comparable to petrol and diesel fuels and produces less pollution.
Gasoil and diesel oil are used for heating oil’s and making of different products. They also include heavy
gas oils and are obtained from the lowest fraction of atmospheric distillation. The heavy gases are
obtained from redistillation of the residual from the atmospheric distillation. The oil is there to
lubricate the engine. In some diesels, including the 7.3L and the 6.0L the oil is also used to fire the
injectors.
