Eileen Sporing was Chief Nursing Officer Emerita at Boston Children’s
Hospital where she served as the Chief Nursing Officer for more than 25
years. She is internationally recognized as a leader in working with
children and families in pediatric settings and as a respected executive in
major health systems. Early in her career, she served as Director of
Clinical Nursing at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and CNO at Riley
Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis where she held a joint appointment as
a Clinical Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Nursing.
Eileen co-edited the first book of Pediatric Policies, Procedures and
Personnel (1984) published by Medical Economics Books as well as the
Handbook of Pediatric Nursing (1985) published by John Wiley and
Sons. She served as a Visiting Scholar at Boston College and was a
member of the Nursing Advisory Boards at Simmons College and
Northeastern University.
Additionally, Ms. Sporing has served in governance positions for the
Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives, The American
Organization of Nursing Executives, The National Association of
Children’s Hospitals, and The American Academy of Pediatrics. She chaired
the Consortium of Harvard Teaching Hospitals for many years and was the
first chair of Harvard Nursing Research Institute.
Eileen has been honored as a Distinguished Lecturer, Sigma Theta Tau
International, named a Champion in Health Care by the Boston Business
Journal in 2007, and received the Mary B Conseision Award (1996), Elaine
Sherwood Service Award (1996) and the President’s Award (2003) from the
Organization of Nurse Leaders of New England. She received the
Distinguished Community Member Award from the University of
Massachusetts Boston School of Nursing in 2013. She is a Fellow in the
American Academy of Nursing. Ms. Sporing received her diploma from Our
Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing, BSN from Trenton State College
Summa Cum Laude, and her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania.
