Act Out
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who was Rabbi Akiva’s greatest
student, was born on Lag BaOmer and also passed away on Lag
BaOmer. (Lag is 33 in Gimatria, and takes places 33 days after
the beginning of Passover.)
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai wrote the most important book in
Kabbalah – the Zohar.
Rabbi Shimon promised that by studying the Zohar, Israel will
merit to be redeemed from exile.
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai opposed the Roman regime and the
Romans persecuted him and wanted to capture him and kill him,
just like they did to his teacher – Rabbi Akiva.
Rabbi Shimon and his son Elazar hid in a cave for 13 years and
learned Torah and composed the Zohar until Eliyahu the
Prophet came and told them they can come out.
When they came out of the cave, they taught the Zohar and the
Torah.
And thus, till this very day, on Lag BaOmer, everyone hold a
celebration in honor of Rabbi Shimon in Meiron.
