Meir Dizengoff
Meir Dizengoff was born in Russia in 1861. When he is 44
years old, he immigrates to Israel with his wife, Zina, and he
joins the "Ahuzat Bait" association. In 1911, he becomes the
head of the association and when Ahuzat Bait becomes the city
of Tel Aviv, he becomes the first mayor of Tel Aviv.
Dizengoff loves Tel Aviv and he takes care of it. He helps to
build new houses and he puts a lot of effort in the city's culture.
Every day he passes in the city streets on his horse - to see that
everything is ok.
Disengoff convinces cultural figures [culture people] like Bialik
and Ehad Ha'am to come and live in the city and Tel Aviv
becomes a center of culture.
One of Disengoff's names is "The father of the city". They tell
that he has a big heart and that he takes care of all the people in
Tel Aviv. Jacob Gluska is a builder and he makes building
blocks. One day, Disengoff is passing by Jacob's workplace and
sees him working. He gets down from his horse and says to
Jacob: "When you finish paying your workers, is there anything
left for you?"
When his wife Tzina dies, he turns the first floor of his house
into a museum and he lives in the second floor until he dies, in
1936.
12 years later, in the same house, Ben Gurion declares the new
state, the state of Israel.
