"Dan Gifts" store
There wasn't always a gift shop on 27 Bethlehem Road. Thirty years ago
there was another shop there, a small tailor's shop, who everyone called by
his family name - Katz. Katz was a Holocaust survivor who got through the
war thanks to his profession. After the Holocaust he made Aliya to Israel,
and in Jerusalem he continued to work as a tailor.
Behind Katz's small shop was a large house. In the house lived a young man
named David. David liked to visit old Katz, to help him, talk to him and
take him home in his car after work. Katz loved David very much, because
he was the only one who asked him how he was doing and was his friend.
When Katz retired, he wanted to give his shop to David.
At the beginning David didn't think it was a good idea. "I can't accept the
store, I'm just a young man!" But Katz wasn't afraid to give David the store.
"It's okay, you're talented and smart, I believe in you." He loved David so
much and wanted to give the store only to him and to no one else.
Finally, David agreed to the idea. He opened a shop for houseware and gifts
in Katz's old shop.
Katz's shop was very small and so David expanded it into his living room.
And indeed, to this day, the store is inside the house and the house is inside
the store.
In the living room of the house (and the shop) David has a special souvenir
from Katz - the old scissors that Katz worked with all his life.
