                   The Tourists Stay in Israel

A tour of the old city in Jerusalem of all things, reveals that the alleys
aren’t entirely empty of tourists. Apparently a sense of security is
obtained, since there’s a police officer or border police soldier posted for
just about each tourist or stand. We met Sam, a tourist from the United
States, a few meters from HaGuy alley, and she hasn’t heard of everything
that’s been happening here in the past two weeks. Those who avoid going
to the capital, certainly to the old city, are actually us Israelis. Neither the
police nor the Ministry of Education have issued special instructions or
warnings not to travel in Jerusalem, but the Israelis aren’t taking any
chances. The Mamila mall isn’t crowded as well, but it’s hard hearing
Hebrew there. In Nazareth we met a group of students of a Christian
school in France who arrived for a field trip in Israel of all places. After a
crisis year for tourism, the industry is trying to take pre-emptive action.
Today the Ministry of Tourism already held an emergency meeting, but
it’s clear to everyone that only the reality will determine the effect on
hundreds of businesses that make a living out of tourism from all sectors.
