Unit 4 – Start Food Shopping in Hebrew

They all ate with pleasure, talked to grandma for a short while,
and left.

For a lot of people, the reason to come to grandma's house was
the pot of “all that’s good”: the neighbors from the end of the
street, the old grocery store man, poor people and beggers, and
also “Chome di gute neshome” (which is in Yiddish “Good soul
Chome”). Chome was a sad widow, and grandma’s special soup
made her happy every morning. For us, as children, it seemed
like the most natural thing in the world, that our private grandma
gives out food to everybody. Perhaps this is why we volunteered
to wash the dishes every now and then and to help serve...

That is how the pot of “all that’s good” used to empty bit by bit,
until there was almost nothing left. When grandma noticed that
it was about to happen, she would stop at once and announce
loudly: “That’s it! No one is to touch the pot any more!”
everybody knew then that what is left in the pot of “all that’s
good” is for grandpa David, grandma Miriam's husband. The
commotion of the people to the house had stopped at once and
all of us grandchildren, wouldn’t dare to touch the pot. In the
evening grandma was very tired from cooking and from all the
people she fed, so she would get into bed to rest and read in the
Tanach (the Bible), her favorite book, for a while. Then grandpa
David would come home from work and grandma who was too
tired to get up would shout from the other room: “Grandpa
David, you have some soup left in the pot. Eat and enjoy!”

Grandpa David, who was a gentle and quiet man, used to come
to her into the room and ask: “And you, my wife, have you
eaten today?” To be honest, sometimes grandma forgot to eat
because of all the work. At other times she didn’t forget but
there was simply nothing left. That’s why she said: “I didn’t eat,
but it’s okay. I am actually too tired, you eat.”
