Grandma Miriam’s pot

My grandma, named Miriam had pots of each and every kind in
the world: she had pots made from iron and copper pots, pots
made of aluminum and a kind of pots that even she didn’t know
what they are made of. And why did my grandma have so many
pots? Because she cooked and cooked endlessly. She cooked for
her family, but she also cooked for whoever had a special
occasion: Bar-Mitzva, a wedding or Brit Mila (circumcision
ceremony). For special occasions my grandma mainly used to
make Yerushalmi kugel, which is a kind of brown noodle pie,
sweet and spicy at the same time. They used to slice [slicing] the
Kugel at the place of the event, and everyone were in the costum
of eating it with pickles.

Of all the pots that my grandma had, there was one wonder pot
that we called the “pot of all that’s good”. Every morning
grandma would fill this pot with good things for a soup: cubes of
vegetables, tasty semolina patties , and sometimes, when she had
a bit of extra money, she would add to the pot pieces of chicken.

If one of us grandchildren arrived by chance at grandma’s home
in the morning - he would join in for the joy of making the soup:
peeling vegetables, sorting grains, rinsing lentils, and the strong
ones would help grandma to pick up the pot and [to] place it on
the primus. The primus was an old and clumsy cooking device.
And still, even when she got a modern stove she liked boiling
the pot of “all that’s good” on the primus.

Approximately two hours later the house would fill up with a
wonderful smell of soup. And suddenly, like magic, the house
turned into a busy train station: men, women and kids came to
ask for a bit of the soup, the good smell of which spread around
the neighborhood. Grandma then would pour everyone a hot
bowl of soup and added [would respect] a few slices of bread.
