4. Possession

This usage is usually a confusing one for English speakers. In English we have a

special verb "to have" to describe possession of something.

In Hebrew we do not have a verb, but we use an expression ...‫ֵיׁש ל‬

Present tense: .‫ֵיׁש ִלי ַתּפּו ַח‬
.‫ֵיׁש לֹו ַתּפּו ַח‬
I have an apple. .‫ֵיׁש ָלנּו ַתּפּו ַח‬
He has an apple. .‫ֵיׁש ָלה ַתּפּוחים‬
We have an apple.
She has apples.

Future tense:

The verb ‫ להיות‬is used according to the subject and not according to the owner of the
subject in one of the following forms:

‫ִת ְה ֶׁיה ִי ְה ֶׁיה‬ ‫ִי ְהיּו‬

Examples:

I will have an apple. → .‫( יה ֶיה ִלי ַתּפּו ַח‬The word ‫ ַתפּו ַח‬is single, thus ‫) ִי ְה ֶׁיה‬
He will have an apple. → .‫ יה ֶיה לֹו ַתּפּו ַח‬.(The word ‫ ַתפּו ַח‬is single, thus ‫) ִי ְה ֶׁיה‬
We will have an apple. → .‫( יה ֶיה ָלנּו ַתּפּו ַח‬The word ‫ ַתפּו ַח‬is single, thus ‫) ִי ְה ֶׁיה‬
She will have apples (plural). → .‫( יהיּו ָלה ַתּפּוחים‬The word ‫ ַתפּו ִחים‬is plural, thus ‫) ִי ְהיּו‬

*Note: In the future tense the verb ‫ להיות‬is used either in the single or the plural, masculine or

feminine form according to the related subject

Present Future ‫ָע ִתיד‬ ‫הֶֹׁוה‬
I have a nice I will have a nice ‫ִי ְה ֶׁיה לי ַבית‬ ‫ֵיׁש לי ַבית‬
house. house.
I have a nice I will have a nice .‫י ֶפה‬ .‫י ֶפה‬
job. job.
I have a lot of I will have a lot ‫ִת ְה ֶׁיה לי‬ ‫ֵיׁש לי ֲעבֹודה‬
friends. of friends. .‫ֲעבֹודה טֹובה‬ .‫טֹובה‬

‫ִי ְהיּו לי ַהר ֵבה‬ ‫ֵיׁש לי ַהר ֵבה‬
