Shira Hadasha
Sometimes Jews do not agree with one another. Any place that has
two Jews has two synagogues.
There is a big argument in the world of Jewish law regarding the place
of women (the woman). The Reform and Conservative are very
liberal. Today even the Orthodox are beginning to be more liberal and
give women a place in prayers and in the congregation. The Shira
Hadasha synagogue is a synagogue with an egalitarian quorum. They
allow women to be a prayer leader/cantor, go up to the Torah and
make (lit. receive) decisions in the synagogue.
This special congregation attracts many people and today it already
has 400 members.
Not everyone is happy with this congregation. The rabbis say that it is
forbidden to pray with this quorum. The feminists are also not happy
because they say that there is not real equality because there are things
that women do not do.
There is criticism, but the quorum is still successful and many
quorums in the world learn from it.
