The Arabs who Enlist

The five eight five recon battalion (has) existed for thirty years, and up until now mostly Bedouins
and Circassians served in it. But in recent years more and more Christian-Arabs and Muslim-Arabs
who decided to enlist to the IDF come to the battalion. The percent of enlisters in the Arab society
is very low – one percent – but in the past three years there’s an almost ten-fold increase in the
number of Arab-Israeli enlisters. Not everyone likes this – many Palestinians as well as Arab-
Israelis calls Arabs in the IDF traitors. But the Arab enlisters want to integrate into Israeli society
better, take care of their financial future, as well as contribute to the country.
