Item #3 (Advanced Level)
The Future is Already Here
If you’ve driven in Jerusalem in recent months, it’s very possible that the
car driving next to you did it all by itself. Though a driver was sitting
behind the wheel, [but] the car was completely autonomous. They didn’t
choose Jerusalem by chance, with its pedestrians and transportation
problems, for driving lessons for the driverless car. If it passes this test in
the capital successfully, the computer, they believe, will be able to deal
with any city in the world. This car is part of a thirty five vehicle fleet,
soon expected to expand to a hundred. It has twelve cameras that film
everything that happens around it at all times. Everything goes to
computers in the trunk. “In the next generation, a chip about this size will
be able to drive the entire vehicle.” In two thousand and twenty one, this
chip will provide autonomous driving for eight million vehicles around the
world. So yes, two thousand twenty one is just around the corner, but the
driverless car still has a rough road ahead – dealing with regulation that
will allow millions to part with the (driving) wheel, and maybe more
importantly, gain the trust of the public, to agree to put its fate at the hands
of technology.
