When Herzel Meets Ehad-Ha'am

Close to Neve-Tzedek, at the heart of "Ahuzat Bait" neighborhood and

underneath Kol-Bo Shalom tower, Herzel Street meets Ehad-Ha'am

Street.

Herzel was a very important person with great ideas. Herzel is the

father of Zionism, the seer of the state. In his opinion, the Jews need a

state of their own, so they will have a safe house in which they would

be able to live the Jewish culture in a free way.

Herzel was very determined and made a great effort to get an approval

for the founding of the Jewish state. In 1898, he traveled to Palestine to

meet with the German emperor. He asked the emperor to help him start

building the state. The emperor said that he liked the idea but he cannot

help him, and sent him to meet with the Turkish Sultan. The Sultan was

actually ready to help Herzel, but he wanted a lot of money in return,

and Herzel was not willing to pay. When he came back to Europe, he

met with the British. They too were willing to help and offered to give

the Jews Uganda in Africa. For a moment , Herzel thought it might not

be a bad idea. What do you think?
