                      Who Likes Cholent?

Thursday, it’s almost midnight, but here in Me’a She’arim the long line is
only beginning, at the end of which – is a plate of cholent. A vibrant
nightlife that is closely linked with the sound of studying still heard at the
synagogue next door. Yeshiva boys march on their stomach as well. It’s
open ‘till two AM here every day; on Thursdays, or as (they) call them in
Yeshivas, “Friday eve”, (they) don’t close before four AM. “Yeshiva boys
always used to study all night, what they call “Mishmer”, and when you’re
up all night, you have to eat something.” Today, at any ultra-orthodox area
you can find dozens of these, an entire culture of food and everything
around (it), and it hasn’t been a Yeshiva boys’ custom alone for a long
time already. Between Bnei Brak and Jerusalem, after a few plates of
cholent, every possible kind of kugel, fresh Challah, herring and even a
traumatic encounter with p’tcha, we didn’t come out with a single answer
to the secret of the old-new cholent culture. But like in a big pot of
cholent, when you toss inside orthodoxy, food, a scent of the past and
current consumerism, you get a Glat Kosher good time, nightlife Me’a
She’arim style.
