Hansen Hospital
In 1880 many Christians came to Israel from Germany. When they
arrived in Jerusalem they saw many leprous [people] sitting in the
city’s gates and begging for alms.
They decided to help the sick people and opened a leprous hospital in
the Talbiya neighborhood, and called it “Jesus’ Aid”. The hospital’s
workers were Germans and the money came from Germany as well,
but the patients were from all religions.
There were water holes on site and a large vegetable garden, so that
the patients at the hospital would be able to get food and drink without
outside help.
In [the year of] 2002 (they) closed down the hospital, since there are
no longer many leprous, and there is a good treatment for the disease.
Today the building belongs to the Municipality of Jerusalem. There’s
an exhibition at the hospital, which tells its history.
