The Polish Bill

The Deputy CEO of Europe (affairs) and the head of the Diaspora and Religion division were the
ones who made it clear to the Deputy Ambassador, in these words, what Israel thinks of the bill that
forbids the use of the term ‘Polish death camps’ and states that a claim as to a Polish partnership in
the crimes of the Holocaust is a criminal offense. Israel opposes the phrasing of the bill, the Deputy
Ambassador was told; the timing in which it was brought up was surprising and especially
unfortunate, on the eve of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. (This) legislation won’t
help the continued uncovering of historic truth. We expect that the Polish government will change
the phrasing of the bill before its final application, and have a dialogue with Israel on the subject.
This bill was passed two days ago in the lower house of the Polish Parliament, and is still expected
to be up for discussion in the Senate. The Polish turmoil puts the Warsaw-Jerusalem relationship on
the brink of a crisis. On the one hand, the bill touches on the Israeli collective’s most exposed
nerves; on the other, Poland (has been) voting with Israel lately on international forums, including
the UN assembly. And so, Israeli diplomacy is settling for protesting alone for now.
