A Woman Driving
The women of Saudi have good reason to celebrate. King Salman decided
to grant them the right to drive, and with that came the end of the ban that
only existed there. Since the early nineties a persistent feminist struggle
took place in Saudi for emancipation from the complete dependency on a
man for transportation, and the peak came with the arrival of the Arab
Spring through social media. International organizations and famous artists
joined the struggle as well. Now King Salman and his activist heir and son
Mohammed are pushing for an economic reform plan. For this, the heir
explains, the massive integration of women into a variety of professions is
required, and of course the removal of the transportation restrictions that
apply to them. And still, many restrictions apply to Saudi’s women, for
instance in matters of clothing, and their status is a controversial issue. In a
few months, as the committee that will review the application of the
decision will conclude its work, a new path will be opened before Saudi’s
women.
