The Rain didn’t Come
Though the wheat fields of the Jordan Valley look green from above, [but] don’t let this spectacular
sight mislead you. When the camera comes closer to the ground, a very bleak picture is revealed.
(It’s) the beginning of March, and the wheat, which was already sown twice this year, didn’t grow to
the desired height. Everything because the rain simply hasn’t come down yet. The costs of one dunam (about
¼ of an acre) of wheat is about two hundred and fifty NIS. The planned profit from selling high quality
wheat grains is around five hundred NIS per dunam, and harvest work is priced at sixty NIS for one dunam.
At this current state, when wheat grains aren’t selling, but (they) have to harvest the stalks, the financial
losses are massive. It’s a similar state at the Jezreel Valley as well. The scarce floods that hit the area in the
beginning of the winter gave some hope to farmers here, but after three months the wheat hasn’t grown to the
desired height and isn’t of a high enough quality. In any case, a shortage of different breads won’t be felt this
year, and the ones to take losses in, estimated at tens of millions of NIS, are only the farmers up north.
