ADV Level – Graffiti in Tel Aviv
An Octopus with a Mask and a Hat
If you look around, you may see a strange figure on different walls in
the streets of Tel Aviv. It has octopus tentacles, a mask and a hat. In
fact, it is a mysterious figure who
wears the "Plague Doctor's
Mask". Such masks were worn by
doctors in the 13th century so they
would not be infected during
epidemics when treating patients.
The artist behind this character
calls itself ARC D.L.P which is the acronym for ARCHITECTE DE
LA PESTE - "The Architect of the Plague". He is an architect by
profession, and he paints under the influence of medieval stories,
through which he seeks to describe the "diseases" of the society in
which we live today. He deals with various topics - from technology
to global terror. The character of the architect of the plague looks
different each time, and the artist says that it will continue to change
always, depending on where it is painted and how the artist feels on
the day he paints.
