                The Last Man from Treblinka

He was one of sixty seven Jews who managed to escape Treblinka [camp],
where nine hundred thousand Jews were murdered. Shmuel Villenberg, the
last survivor from the concentration camp alive, passed away last night in
Tel Aviv at the age of ninety three. Villenberg was born in Poland, and
volunteered for the Polish army when the war began. In nineteen forty two
he was sent to Treblinka, from which he managed to escape. In Warsaw he
joined the Polish resistance. He made Aliyah to Israel in nineteen fifty,
after he retired he started painting and sculpting. Most of his artwork was
about preserving the memory of the holocaust. When thirty seven
holocaust survivors pass away each day, thirteen thousand a year, even
Villenberg knew he wouldn’t live forever. Along with his wife and
daughter he worked in recent years to establish a visitor center in
Treblinka, which he won’t live to see created.
