Item #3 (Advanced Level)
A True Hero
Seeing twelve year old Elad Haim running on the field and fighting for
every ball is a huge victory. Up until a year ago Elad was actually confined
to hospital beds, and used a wheelchair. He had a rare kind of subdermal
lymphoma [cancer], which only thirteen people around the world have.
Elad tells us it all started at age six; one morning he just couldn’t get out of
bed. At first the doctors told him it was mononucleosis. Only after three
years of relentless suffering Elad was diagnosed with the rare lymphoma.
A year ago the Haim family got joyous news from the doctors: Elad was
able to recover from the cancer, but then another blow was dropped, a rare
autoimmune disease that hurts muscles. At age eleven, Elad had to go in
and out of hospitals again. But he didn’t intend on losing this battle either.
And last week, on his twelfth birthday, Elad went back to school. For him,
the dream of getting back on the field, came true.
