Grandma Cooks Gourmet
Eyal Shany got to make, along with eighty nine year old Sonya Topel, her
famous kugel. Shany might be a successful chef, but Sonya found out he
still has a long way until he learns the secrets of kugel. Esther Rusak, an
eighty six year old holocaust survivor, taught chef Eyal Lavie from the
Rokach Seventy Three restaurant, the big secret to P’tcha. A year ago,
twenty four seniors and holocaust survivors collaborated with twenty four
chefs to create the book ‘Grandma Cooks Gourmet’ by the Shorashim
group. By word of mouth, the book has already sold nine thousand copies.
Tammy Shechnay from the Shorashim group, who initiated the book as an
activity for the seniors, was surprised a month ago when she opened her
email; luckily Tammy didn’t delete the mail from Edouard Cointreau, the
president of the Gourmand International competition, the Academy
Awards of cook books. He sees tens of thousands of books a year from all
over the world, and chose, to the amazement of the two hundred people
who volunteered in the production of the book, Grandma Cooks Gourmet
to compete in May in China, to be the best cookbook in the world.
