Item #2 (Advanced Level)
No Trans Fat
Popcorn, croissants, melawach, cakes, cookies, boorekas, pizzas, waffles,
jahnoun, peanut butter, all these are just examples of food products that
contain a certain kind of fat called trans fat, and the World Health
Organization now declares war on. But hang on, don’t panic, nobody is
going to take away the junk food you love so much. The industry in Israel,
as in many other advanced countries, has been preparing for this time.
Trans fat is actually regular liquid vegetable oil [lit. fat] that by chemical
process becomes solid fat, in order to cut costs and prolong products’ shelf
life. The result: health-damaging food, which causes the death of more
than half a million people every year worldwide. The industry in Israel,
encouraged by the Ministry of Health, is trying to wean off it. Even the
Ministry of Health sends a calming message and says that by and large the
food industry in Israel has stopped using trans fat almost entirely, but hold
on, there are other enemies. It’s recommended to look at the ingredients on
the back of the label.
