Shaarei Achim Synagogue
Shaarei Achim Synagogue is a synagogue belonging to Kurdish
Jewry.
Kurdish Jewry have a special tradition and unique stories. They
believe that they came to Kurdistan after the exile of the ten tribes, an
exile from 720 BCE.
The region of Kurdistan has severe topographical conditions. Because
of these conditions there was no connection between Kurdish Jewry
and other the Jewish communities.
Maybe that explains the special story of Kurdish Jewry – Rabbi Osnat
Barazani. A woman rabbi who even stood at the head of a yeshiva!
She was not a Reform or modern rabbi, it was in the 17th century...
Osnat was the daughter and granddaughter of prominent rabbis in
Kurdistan. When she was a child her father had established a yeshiva
and was the head of the Yeshiva. When she grew up, her father
married her off to one of his students, Rabbi Yaacov Mizrahi, who
replaced him as head of the yeshiva after his death. Over the years
Osnat taught at the yeshiva and everyone respected her very much.
The peak was after her husband's death, when she became the head of
the yeshiva.
The community has a long letter where a rabbi addresses Rabbi Osnat
with the title ‘our teacher and rabbi’.
So who said women cannot be a rabbis?
