No Work in Yeruham

The Labor Court announced yesterday that it is accepting the desire of the Negev Ceramics
management to close down the plant in Yeruham, a city in an employment crisis with more than ten
percent unemployment. And this morning, after a sad night in the protest tent outside the plant,
workers burned tires and set out to intersections. Among the frustrated workers we also met
brothers Moshe and Yakov Solomon. Thirty five years ago they started working in the plant
together. Moshe, fifty six years old today, worked security and recently underwent heart surgery,
and fifty three year old Yakov, production line manager. Together they raised their families and
now they are fighting together for their livelihood and for the right to make an honest living. Today
the workers and Histadrut, as well as some Knesset Members, argued that the management took
advantage of these employees, and acted with malice. About six months ago the Negev Ceramics
company bought the plant, and almost immediately separated (itself) from the weakest link, the
plant in Yeruham, in order to focus on increasing import profits. The company’s management claim
the state’s policy promotes cheap imports, and so the continuing existence of the plant in Yeruham
wasn’t feasible.
