Valley of the Son of Hinnom
In the time of the First Temple this place was used as a place of worship
to Molech.
The worship included sacrificing children to Molech and burning them
alive. Because of this horror, the name ‘Valley of the Son of Hinnom’
was turned from a geographical term into a religious abstract concept -
‘Gehenom’, which is used as a name for hell.
This is how Chazal describe the place:
“There are two palms in the valley of Hinnom, between which there
ascends smoke … and it is the entrance to Gehenna.”
