Mishkenot Sha'ananim

Before 1860 all the Jews in Jerusalem lived within the walls of

the Old City. It was very difficult living inside the walls, there

was no space, the houses were expensive and there was dirt,

poverty and diseases. In 1860 Montefiore built the

neighborhood Mishkenot Sha'ananim. The poor people from the

Old City could rent apartments for little money.

"Mishkenot" (dwellings) = houses, Sha'ananim (tranquil) =

happy and without problems.

The name means that the people in the neighborhood lived

happily and with sense of security. Today many Israelis and

tourists from America and France live in the neighborhood.

There is also a hotel and a music center in the neighborhood.
