Passing on Red is Expensive

Seventy two people were killed in car accidents in the first three months of the year. Increasing
police enforcement, taking care of infrastructure and the vast propaganda have (all) failed, in the
attempt of stopping vehicular deaths. Due to the accountability of the human factor, as well as just
because it puts a great deal of money into the national treasury, the government is making vehicular
fines more expensive as of tomorrow. The fine for not obeying a red light will jump from a
thousand to a thousand and five hundred NIS, driving a car without a valid registration will cost us
a thousand NIS, and an additional fine for two hundred and fifty NIS is supposed to take bicycle
riders off the sidewalks. In an attempt to fight the overload at the Transportation Courts, indictment
for a number of offenses is cancelled. For instance, a driver caught speeding will be fined a
thousand and five hundred NIS and won’t be able to stand trial. Not yielding to a pedestrian at a
crossroad will add up to a fine of two hundred and fifty NIS instead of an indictment. An electric
bicycle rider below the legal age, sixteen, will be fined a thousand NIS. Making fines higher [lit.
worse] will increase deterrence against delinquent drivers, and allow for a quick punishment very
close to when the violation occurred.
