The "Even Israel" Neighborhood
Even Israel is the first neighborhood in Nachlaot. (They) built in in 1875.
In the 19th century, neighborhoods in Jerusalem were very homogenous: a
neighborhood for Ashkenazis and a neighborhood for Sephardics; a
neighborhood for the rich and a neighborhood for the poor…
But in Even Israel everyone lived together.
There’s an interesting story about the neighborhood - the story of the stove:
Between the houses in the old neighborhoods of Jerusalem there is a big
yard for all the houses. There was a big stove in the yard, for everyone.
On Friday, each mother cooks a pot with food for Shabbat, and the kids
put the pot in the stove.
On Saturday morning the kids would take the pot home for lunch. But
there’s a problem: all of the pots are very similar, and the kids always take
the wrong pot!
And this way the Ashkenazi Firestein family, that never eats spicy (food),
gets the Sephardic Amrani family’s pot, and eats very spicy food all
Shabbat long.
And the Amrani family ate sweet gefilte fish from the Firestein family’s
pot…
The parents were angry at first, but later (they) thought that it’s fun to eat
new food and asked each other for the recipes.
