Israeli Spirulina
For almost a hundred years, the leading agricultural field in the Bet She’an
Valley is breeding fish in pools. But now green algae grows in this water.
This isn’t regular algae or something that grew by chance, this is spirulina
– an algae classified around the world as a super-food, and is also worth a
lot of money. For several years the Valley of Springs have been working
on growing spirulina. The difficulty of continuing to make a living off of
agriculture in Israel led farms to search for new areas, less traditional and
more profitable. Now six settlements from the area competed building this
spirulina farm, which is the biggest in Europe and about seven million
dollars were invested in it. Already today this business is much more
profitable than breeding fish for instance. (You) can only see the algae’s
cells under a microscope, and at the end of growing (it) in greenhouses,
(you) can find spirulina as a food additive or in a health smoothie. In
northern Israel (they’re) trying to take (their) longstanding agriculture
tradition forwards, and adjust it to the changing reality. And many
entrepreneurs, along with farmers, understand that in order to keep making
an honest living (they) have to reveal completely new markets, spirulina is
one of them.
