                                                Who is Wizzy?

We all know Srulik, Israel’s national cartoon character. Biblical sandals,

shorts and a “tembel” hat, with a single lock peeping out of it. Caricaturist
Kariel Gardosh, known by his nickname Dosh, created this character in the

early fifties. Srulik appeared in Ma’ariv every day for decades, was

enlisted to the IDF in the Six Day War and became a national symbol
commemorated on the postage stamp of the jubilee festivities. But few

know of Srulik’s lost sister. In early nineteen sixty seven Dosh was
approached by the WIZO organization. They asked him to create a cartoon

character they’ll use in diplomacy for Israel around the world and would

represent the organization. He mulled it over in his sketches: with a hat, a
[hair] bow or a headkerchief? Long, short or curly hair? With a WIZO

medallion or a Star-of-David earring? By the end of the process a new

character with international chic was created and given the name Wizzy.
Over the years the organization stopped using the character and it was

forgotten, while Srulik continued to grow up and grow older. Today both

characters are no longer in use, but (those) who believe that Srulik is still
planting trees somewhere, or bravely fighting Hezbollah fighters, should

know that Wizzy is probably fighting the BDS movement in another
            diplomacy campaign abroad.
