E-Tone™: Ulpan-Or Weekly News Digest
Item #1 (Advanced Level)
WhatsApp from the Age of Sixteen
With a billion and a half users and the title of one of the most popular apps
in the world, WhatsApp was forced to announce that very soon only users
aged sixteen and up would be able to use the app in the European Union
countries. Next month new privacy laws will come into effect in the
European Union, which force the biggest companies in the world to make
adjustments in (their) terms of use. In the rest of the world, as in Israel, the
minimal age to use WhatsApp [app] will remain thirteen. Parents in Israel
would love for the new rules to be valid in Israel as well, but they too
understand they would be very difficult to enforce. WhatsApp is currently
owned by Facebook, which also recently announced changes in its privacy
policy. Teenagers aged thirteen to fifteen, who would want to use the
biggest social network in the world, will from now on have to present
Facebook with a special permit from a parent to be able to upload posts.
And what about us? Even if the minimum age doesn’t go up, here (they’re)
promoting legislation amendments that would allow every user to delete
information collected on them in social media. A necessary change in an
age when our most private information is found online [today].
