The Origin of
the Name
The mosque was named after the prominent scholar and jurist Abu al-
Hasan Ibn Yakhalf al-Tannasi, one of the scholars of the city of Tenes
who settled in Tlemcen in the late 7th century AH (13th century AD).
He was considered one of the best, most knowledgeable and most
outstanding scholars of his time. Al-Tannasi inherited the high status
occupied by his brother Abu Ishaq Ibrahim at the court of the Bani
Zian dynasty. He was then appointed to teach at this mosque after
the death of his brother due to his vast knowledge and jurisprudence.
Many students from various regions flocked to him, and among his
students was the prominent scholar Abu Abdullah Muhammad
ibn Ibrahim al-Abli, the teacher of Abd al-Rahman ibn Khaldun.
