The Mosque
during the
French
Occupation
The mosque underwent many transformations
due to the intervention of the colonizer who
tried to erase the Islamic and historical identity.
In 1849, the mosque was converted into a Quranic
school, then into a French Islamic school. In 1898, the
idea of converting the mosque into a city museum was
initiated by the French architect Albert Ballu, who was
affiliated with the French Colonial Department in Oran.
