Mr Evan Bonser, our Junior campuses’ STEM/STEAM Three Stage 2 students at the Wentworth Falls
Specialist has been keeping our young creative Junior School has won the Mathematical Association
enthusiasts busy inventing, imagining, designing, of New South Wales (MANSW) Investigating with
making, animating and coding. Mathematics Prize for their Sugar Glide nesting box
project.
Two very popular units were building rockets (and
launching them successfully!) and creating circuit The students decided to build a Sugar Glider nesting
boards, with lights and buzzers. box after becoming concerned about the declining
population of sugar gliders in the wake of the
2019/2020 bushfires together with the ongoing
threat from cats, dogs and foxes.
The three nine-year-olds used mathematics, research
and investigation techniques to develop the Sugar
Glide nesting box. This included researching the local
Sugar Glide population, developing a prototype from
cardboard, creating a budget, and then building the
nesting box using screws, glue and clamps.
The children had so much fun learning about
mathematical concepts such as 2D modelling, volume,
budgeting and measurement – and how to use this
knowledge to improve the world around them.
Well done, Clare, Matilda and Mariella!
