YEAR 11 WILDERNESS EDUCATION | 15
The second major expedition for the Year
11 course took place during the first week
of the mid-year holidays, with a Snowshoe
Expedition, led by Mr. Parrish Robbins (Head
of Outdoor Education).
Two groups travelled across the Main Range
and the Rolling Ground of the Kosciuszko
National Park experiencing the beauty and
challenges of the winter alpine environment.
The high winds experienced during the first
two days made progress challenging, but
using their snowcraft skills the students
created wind breaks, tent platforms and
protected kitchen areas to increase comfort.
The students learnt about avalanche risk,
built snow caves, ascended and descended
steep slopes, crossed snow bridges and
navigated in difficult conditions. BMGS
is proud of these students’ achievements
and of the unique and positive outcomes
provided by our Stage 6 Outdoor Leadership
course.
