European
Politics
n order to ensure a healthy diet for European citizens, there are
I some regulations. This is to ensure that on the one hand consum-
ers are informed as thorough as possible about the products, and on
the other hand no harmful ingredients are contained in the products.
Some laws and regulations of the European Union are explained below.
For example, uniform (bar) codes must be printed on all packages in the
EU indicating which nutrients a product contains. For example, informa-
tion on the energy content, the amount of fat, carbohydrates, sugar, pro-
tein has to be printed on all packages. In addition, each product has to give
information about allergenic ingredients. Restaurants have to provide this
information for allergy sufferers. The EU has introduced, too, a regulation
for organic products. In order to guarantee the consumer that something
is a sustainably produced food, there is a uniform organic seal of the Eu-
ropean Union on products. Another EU seal is the well-known CE mark,
which is intended to make it easier for customers to buy organic food.
There are also strict rules for the use of chemicals in cosmetics to protect
consumers.
