THE ARTS:

        Some of the professions whose

        practitioners are frequently pressured
to work for free are found in the arts. Try

        asking your doctor, lawyer, or
contractor to perform their services for

the "exposure" -- or better yet, ask them
to pay YOU, while you benefit from their

        expertise. Yet musicians, artists,
        writers, poets, authors, photographers,

        models, designers, actors, dancers,
etc., are routinely expected to donate
their talents and skills, at times having

to expend their own resources while
        others are making money.

To add insult to injury, artists are often

exploited by predators that lurk in the
shadows -- with their slick smiles and
empty promises -- who feed off the

        artists’ souls, passions, and dreams.
Many in the arts get discouraged and

give up out of sheer frustration from not
being able to make a living from their

        craft.

        Creativity is powerful. It endures

and leaves a legacy. It is a catalyst
        for change, provokes thought, and

can heal a broken spirit. Some of
        the greatest moments in history

        revolve around music, film, books,
theatre, a painting, or a photo.

        Encourage, inspire, support

the arts! The future will thank Pictured: Trombone Shorty
