TB: What did you take away from visiting with Mr. Martin and hearing his stories
of the WWII battles in which he was involved?
KW: Writing and conversating with Jim Martin was truly an honor. I learned so much
about his history, how much bravery being in the military instills in someone and
gained an ever-deeper appreciation for our veterans and those currently serving to
keep our country free.
TB: Your latest release is the EP ‘The Night We Fell In Love.’ Talk about that
EP.
KW: My newest EP, ‘The Night We Fell in Love,’ represents the beautiful
phenomenon of love at first sight. Putting this feeling into words was difficult, but it
has become one of my favorite songs to sing for audiences.
TB: Your catalog (at least on Spotify) goes back to 2009. When you look back
over the 14 years of released music, what are some thoughts that come to your
mind?
KW: In retrospect, these past 14 years of pursuing music have been full of ups and
downs, but I would not change a single thing about it! It has made me the person I
am today, and I have appreciated every second of the journey. The long months
touring, the opportunities to meet fans, and the chance to share my songs all boil
down to pure love of music and human connection.
TB: How have you grown as a writer and as a musician over those 14+ years?
KW: Undoubtedly, I have grown as a writer, musician, and person, across my 14-
year-long career in this industry. It is humbling to know that no matter how far down
the road I am, there is always something new to learn about life through music.
TB: What is the biggest highlight to date for Karen Waldrup?
KW: Choosing just one highlight from my career is hard because I have been
fortunate enough to experience several! The first one that comes to mind is the
opportunity to write with WW11 Veteran Jim Martin! While the shows and awards
have been deeply appreciated, there is nothing better than the opportunity to manifest
someone’s life experiences into a song.
TB: Outside of money, what is the biggest struggle for an independent
musician?
KW: Being an independent artist may come with a few minor struggles, but I have no
complaints! I have the chance to tour with a band that I consider family, share my
music with fans all over the world, and most important of all, I have been to make my
passion for music a career! All the highs are worth any struggle that comes my way.
TB: You have been able to achieve a lot over your career, been featured in many
magazines, Netflix, The Hallmark Channel, and sold-out shows. What is some
advice you would give to an artist looking to pursue music as a career?
KW: If I could give advice to any young aspiring musicians, it would be to always stay
true to who you are and why you began music. This industry can be a difficult winding
road, but it is essential to always stay grateful, positive, and genuine.
