There was plenty of interaction between the performers and the adoring audience. At one
point, Walter Orange asked the audience to stand up, turn to somebody you don't know, and
say, “Hi.” People all around me complied. Some shook hands. Some got high-fives. I managed
to get a handshake or two from strangers myself. As the music from the band vamped, Walter
continued his passionate shouting for everyone to keep their eyes on one another, inciting
laughter from the audience when he instructed us to start asking for each other’s numbers.
William, the choreographer, casually strutted the stage, handing his guitars and trumpets to
stage hands and showing off for the concert stage cameras. He removed his shiny, sparkly,
studded jacket to boogie in classic Motown line formation with Walter Orange, J.D. Nicholas,
and the members of The Mean Machine, The Commodores' long-time backing band. William
also served as the evening's historian, introducing the band members and reminding the
audience of the benchmarks in The Commodores' career.
