MW: You recently released an album, ‘The Last Sundown.’ Can you tell us about it?
CW: Well, I started work on the album as soon as ‘Deep in the Blood’ was released. ‘Deep in the Blood’
was only ever meant to be demos, but as soon as Greg added his vocals, I decided to release it. The
album is unrecognisable from what it initially started out as. I think I restructured/ restarted the album 4
times. In 2020, we were set to tour Spain. So, we were looking at releasing an album to support the
tour, but obviously the world changed early in 2020. So, we had to rethink our options. I think there were
25+ songs recorded or partly recorded. I think when you work on an album for so long you lose
perspective and disconnect with songs. Some songs don't have the same meaning or relevance
anymore when placed with others. We really struggled with some of the themes of the album. We didn't
want to appear preachy or political. I remember a conversation we had on a long drive through the
mountains of Romania about the inclusion of the song ‘1964.’ I think we have more confidence as song
writers now. I'll let Greg tell you about the title track. I normally provide the music with some lyrics, then
send them to Greg. We don't have sensitivities around our work. We can be honest with each other,
and I think that is so important. I remember before a show in Portugal, Greg came and sat with me on
my balcony as I was playing my guitar. I was just ad-libbing. Greg pulled out what he liked. He kind of
conducted the arrangement. When I was home, I sent him a demo of the track with my lyrics and vocals.
He basically told me he wasn't gonna sing those lyrics, and in an hour, he had written ‘Can't Shake
These Blues,’ and I must admit it was a far greater song with those lyrics.
“The album gave me a chance to address
many issues that were haunting me .”
