Greg Copeland: ‘The Last Sundown’ is very
personal for me. I have always been very
curious about my ancestry. One day, my
cousin was able to trace our ancestry back to
1854. My great, great, great grandfather,
whose name was Tom Whyte, was a British
plantation/slave owner who was very rich. I
always wondered what I would say to him if I
would have met him on his last day of life…his
‘Last Sundown!’ The album gave me a chance
to address many issues that were haunting
me.
MW: Does it consist of all original material?
GC: The album consists of originals except
‘Alabama Train’ and ‘Don't let the Devil Ride.’
MW: I believe it was scheduled to be issued
in 2021 but was postponed due to the
pandemic. How did you go about writing
and recording during this time?
CW: To be honest, I'm glad the album wasn't
released in 2021. I was a little lost in regards
to the direction.
GC: Actually, the postponement helped us to
be able to gather our thoughts and feelings
and decide in which direction that we wanted
to go. We started writing and composing again
and suddenly things started to click.
MW: What was the biggest learning curve
during this period?
GC: I think that the biggest learning curve for
me was learning not to be afraid of potential
controversy! Those sounds give us a certain
uniqueness!
