Chapter 1 (Engineering Materials)

Introduction
This branch of science is concerned with the study of engineering materials used in the
construction of various structures (civil, architectural, mechanical, electrical, etc.), and this
chapter includes types of Engineering maerials, Bonding materials, and Timbers
Lime
Lime is considered one of the first used bonding materials in the history. It is produced from
calcium oxide that result from heating of lime rock (calcium carbonate) to a high temperature
(900-1000 C). Lime can be used as a plaster material and as a bonding materials

Gypsum
Is a structural material used in the work of laying the foundations of the industry and gypsum
units and its raw material is a salt of calcium sulfate contain two parts of crystallization water
or anhydrite salt (calcium sulphate-free of water). Gypsum can be used in plastering, Gypsum
blocks , and ddecoration
