The March 1, 1949 General Offensive was a

surprise attack by the Indonesian

National Army (TNI) on the Dutch-held

city of Yogyakarta. The main purpose of

this attack was to prove to the

international community that the

fighting spirit of the Indonesian people

had not been extinguished and to refute

Dutch claims that the Republic of

Indonesia had been destroyed. Despite
